Ascension is Hiring a Music Director

Church of the Ascension is seeking a part-time Director of Music to join our diverse and energetic community.

Worship music at Church of the Ascension is varied, ranging from contemporary songs from various sources as well as music with African roots to traditional hymns. The congregation includes a number of skilled musicians and singers, who add their talents to those of the parish’s music director. Instruments used regularly include violin, guitar, drums and saxophone in addition to piano and organ. The focus of the music is on participation and worship, rather than performance. There is no permanent choir; ad hoc groups come together seasonally as needed.

10 hours / week: $20-24 per hour.


  • Lead music for Sunday services (10:00 am) and for occasional liturgical holy days (Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday etc.).
  • Recruit, coordinate and facilitate the involvement of amateur musicians in the church (instruments and vocalists); recruit and direct pick up choirs for holiday services; work with musicians with varying skill levels and ages.
  • Plan service music with the priest, and liaise with the church worship committee
  • Report on Ascension’s use of copyrighted sheet music, and other music-related administrative tasks.

  • skilled on keyboard especially on the piano

  • Highly organized
  • Ability to lead vocalists
  • Flexible, openness to multiple styles
  • Willing to learn about the Anglican tradition, as expressed at Church of the Ascension

Desirable skills and capacities

  • Capacities with other musical instruments, including organ
  • Familiar with music for a church setting
  • Basic knowledge of sound systems

Short-listed candidates will be invited to an interview which will include an audition. Finalists will be invited to lead a Sunday service.
